"Even in India there are many young women who are passionate about their job as mixologists and are doing very well," Smith, who was in Delhi and Mumbai recently and held a master class in vodka cocktails for women, said. She feels that with exciting new techniques such as molecular mixology and flash bartending now accessible in India, this is a glamorous and exciting career option for young women who are looking for an unconventional career choice.Ĭlaire Smith, brand ambassador for Belvedere, a luxury vodka brand from Moët Hennessy, believes that globally often women show more creative talents for mixing cocktails than men. ![]() "At my institute, I increasingly train girls from cities such as Jaipur, Pune and Bengaluru, besides Delhi and Mumbai," says Basu who runs STIR, a professional bartending academy she is also an author of a book on mixology. "Girls who work behind bars in India are possibly safer and more secure than girls who go out for a drink," she says, adding that mindsets are changing among conservative families in India. Shatbhi Basu, India’s first woman bartender who has been in the business of mixing drinks for over 32 years, obviously agrees. That women are ready to challenge the stereotype and enter this profession is clear from the response to the La Maison Cointreau competition, he added. "Bartending and mixology as a profession have been associated with only men for a long time in India but with acceptance of a growing number of women bartenders in the country, we believe that this is a good time for women to venture into this profession," says Rukn Luthra, managing director, Rémy Cointreau, Indian sub-continent and Gulf. Recently when French alcobev maker Remy Cointreau unveiled India’s first women’s bartending competition, it wasn’t quite prepared for the overwhelming response. ![]()
